Legacy effects and landscape choices in a desert city

•We found that legacy effects influence landscape choices and preferences in Phoenix, Arizona.•Long-time Phoenicians chose grass yards due to socialization to local customs.•Findings are contrary to older studies and common assumptions about newcomers’ lawn demands.•Residents in older neighborhoods both prefer and have grass landscapes compared to others.•Legacy effects can impede landscape change in cities due to established traditions and norms.
