Dr. Valentina Mussi has expertise in the areas of spectroscopy, applied optics and quantum optics, physics of surfaces and nanotechnology applied to biomedicine. She graduated in 1998 at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" with a thesis on Quantum Optics ("Engineering of Entangled States"). She received her Ph.D. in physics in 2003 at the University Roma Tre, with a thesis on optical properties of color centers produced by ion irradiation in alkali halides, doing part of the work at the Laboratoire de Phisico-Chimie deux Materiaux Luminescentes Lyon1 University Claude Bernard (Lyon, France), directed by Professor Bernard Jacquier, in the context of the cooperation project between Italy and France "Galileo". In recent years, she has directed the research focused on the development of nanopore biosensors for bioanalytics and diagnostics, nanostructured devices basde on carbon nanotubes for drug delivery applications, and IR and Raman spectroscopy for biomedicine and conservation of cultural heritage at the Nanomed Labs of the Physics Department of the University of Genova. In July 2011, she gained a position of assistant professor at the Physics Department of the University of Genova, carrying out teaching assignments at the Faculty of Humanities (Physics for Cultural Heritage) and Medicine (Medical Physics and Biophysics). Since November 2012, she is a research scientist at the National Research Council, CNR, in the Area of Roma Tor Vergata (first in the Institute of Complex Systems, ISC, then, from 2017, in the Institute of Microelectronics and Microsystems, IMM) where she works on the use of vibrational micro-spectroscopy for analytical and diagnostic applications. She is author of numerous articles published in international journals (http://publicationslist.org/vale_nena) and of two patents relating to nanoscale biosensors for nanomedicine applications. In October 2010, she contributed to the foundation of the spin-off of the University of Genova "Nanomed Srl", and in 2013 she obtained the National Scientific Qualification for Associate Professor. From 2013 to 2017 she coordinated the CNR inter-departmental Virtual Laboratory Tech4Bio (www.tech4bio.eu), which includes several Institutes (presently IMM, IFN, IFT, ISM) and brings together skills and facilities in the field of Life Science: biosensors, biochemistry, microscopy, spectroscopy, advanced microfluidic devices and lab-on-chip development for bioanalytics and diagnostics, micro and nano-scale characterization, design and study of new smart biomaterials. From July 2014 to September 2017 she was responsible for the Supporting Organizational Unit of the Institute of Complex Systems of CNR in the Rome Research Area of Tor Vergata, UOS ISC RM2. She is an expert evaluator for H2020-FETOPEN-2016-2017-RIA, for the Italian Ministry for Economic Development (H2020 Call for Sustainable Growth Fund and Call PON 2014/2020, Life Science sector) and for the Ministry of University and Research (Call FARE 2016). She is a member of the organizing committee of the "Biophysics@Rome" periodical conference (www.biophysicsatrome.org), and since 2015 she is member of the European COST Action Raman4Clinics (www.cost.eu/COST_Actions/bmbs/BM1401). From March 2018 she is in charge for the Technological Area "Characterization" at the Rome Unit of IMM-CNR. From February 2019 she is member of the Scientific Board of Festival della Scienza di Genova (www.festivalscienza.it/site/home.html)
